Ranking Songs from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix

I first heard this album when I was a junior in high school, around 8 years after it came out (2009). Phoenix focuses on indie rock and synth pop, and this album has 10 songs and lasts 37 minutes. When it was released, it brought the band to mainstream popularity.

These rankings are based on personal taste, not the music quality itself.

  1. Liztomania

It’s one of the most popular songs on the album for a reason. First, I’m biased and have a lot of end-of-summer memories associated with this song, so it feels nostalgic and happy. It’s light, catchy, and uses synth elements to make a song that you can “feel”.

  1. 1901

Most of the song’s lyrics don't make sense and/or go together, but that’s what makes it sound so good. Phoenix is also French, and their accent shows up in a couple different words in this song, adding a more unique sound.

  1. Love Like a Sunset, Pt. 1

This song doesn’t even have lyrics, the beginning is just so good it beat out all of the other songs on the album. It sounds like the soundtrack of a movie, and again, feels bright and like summer would. I love the electronics on this.

  1. Fences

The production is done well, with electronic elements blending well with the “natural” instruments and vocals. The beginning is beautiful and is another part of the album that creates a feeling.

  1. Armistice

The beginning almost sounds like a commercial? There are so many weird elements to this song it gives it character and credibility in my eyes.

  1. Girlfriend

Girlfriend starts strong and unfortunately progresses into a flatter sound, which is why it’s lower on the list. Overall not a bad song, it just doesn’t stack up to the other 5 in my opinion.

  1. Rome

I have no words. Neutral, not good or bad. I used to like this song more but I think it was just because I was listening to something “new” in comparison to the other songs because I hadn’t kept listening to it after the first time I listened to the album.

  1. Love Like a Sunset, Pt. 2

The synths combined with an acoustic guitar and slow signing all throw me off. Especially because the first part of the song is so well calculated and mastered to sound amazing, it falls flat in comparison.

      9/10. Lasso/Countdown

They’re so boring and feel like Phoenix is trying to capitalize on mainstream music. They also sound like a local Christian band recorded them - not in a bad way, they’re just not produced to the same standard as the rest of the album (in my opinion). Nothing interesting really happens, the sound is flatter and doesn’t offer much diversity.

I love certain songs on this album and don't love others, but I'd still recommend that everyone listen to at least the top 3 picks. They're unique and have a fun atmosphere.
