Music to Me - Throughout College

As I’ve begun my senior year, I want to reflect on how my music taste has changed throughout my time at Bradley. Freshman year I listened to indie and alternative music, leaning toward popular artists like The Strokes, Cage the Elephant, Tame Impala, and others within these genres. I essentially carried over my music taste from high school.

The Strokes:

Going into my sophomore year, I discovered podcasts, and nearly stopped listening to music. My favorite was Crime Junkie, and in April I discovered Morbid and haven’t stopped listening to them since. Sophomore year I also listened to indie and alternative music like Of Montreal, Dr. Dog, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra:

I went into Junior year in a phase of not listening to much music again. At the time, I liked Azealia Banks and gravitated towards more pop sounding indie music, as well as rap-ish alternative music. In September I went to a music festival in Chicago called Pitchfork, and that’s what fully brought me back into listening to music. The music that I listened to over the summer mixed with the genres from Pitchfork are what started my current phase. I started listening to Rico Nasty, Jasiah, Denzel Curry, and similar artists. From these, I discovered more “mainstream” rap music and realized that I actually liked it. I started listening to JPEG Mafia, Danger Incorporated, and Death Grips. And then, around December, I got into actual mainstream rap.

Rico Nasty:

My favorites my senior year are a combination of most of my Junior spring semester. Future, Young Dolph, Pop Smoke, and other trap artists. I’ve been listening to more indie and alternative music too. This past year my love for music has expanded through concerts, festivals, and just finding new artists through friends or other artists I already listen to.

Pop Smoke:

It's been exciting to see how much my music taste has changed and how for the most part, I still enjoy all of the genres I have listened to.

  1. I can definitely relate to this journey! I use to listen to alternative and rock genres from my high school years to part of my college years. I then discovered that I really liked the mainstream rap genre and have been occasionally listening to alternative rock as well. My all-time favorite in the rap genre is definitely Kendrick Lamar! I also listen to Future as well!

  2. This post made me feel so much better about my listening habits. Even though they are wildly different in terms of what I listen to, the behavior is the same. I've gone from listening to talk radio, to podcasts, and now almost exclusively audio books. I finished an audio book while I was out this week, and couldn't download a new one, so I switched back to a fav podcast and realized how much I miss them. Maybe our ears/brain need different things at different times?
